Facebook Group: V-Twin Specials V-Twin Specials "This group is for all people who are interested in or building a 'special', using a European engine. Normally a JAP, but anything is fine. "Lincolnshire’s East Kirkby Aviation Centre hosted a V-twin day on October 2016, featuring Brian Shackleford’s just-completed special,... a stunning piece of engineering combining modern technology..." the author of paragraph from this point gets his facts completely wrong . The engine is NOT based on a Buell! In actual fact, the engine was completely designed and built by engineer, Brian Shackleford - he made all the engine internals, including crankshaft, big ends and camshafts! See later updates for more information. The following link is the source of misinformation that I have corrected above: classicmotorcycle.co.uk See V-TWIN NEWS PAGE 12 for more.

TCM-Dec-p10-1

In the Netherlands, "Zeeland builder Harry" has taken several years to put together this salt-flats racer as a tribute to Cees Fick, the Dutch bitza-builder in the 60s and 70s.

It features a genuine Cees Fick engine with HD WL/WLA 45 bottom end; Matchless G80 top ends;and what looks like a late-forties-early fifties BSA gearxox (but a Triumph one is added according to the build plan linked below): Here is the site following the design and build project: FICKIN' BONNEVILLE. Harry was apparently stopped by the police during his first ride on the bike; An article on the bike appeared in the Dutch magazine, Bigtwin in March 2015 (Maart 2015) backissue:

Les Phelps" 1939 Model X Matchless fitted with the OHV engine. A bike that should have been built by Matchless over 80 years ago. This may be the only one so far...except for Sid Leitch's "AJS Golden Streak", but that is actually a Matchless model X modified to OHV rather than being fitted with the "MX2" OHV engine, that was made by Matchless specifically for Morgan 3-wheelers from 1933 to 1939. It was also fitted to some Brough Superiors. We saw Bill Higginson's "Norton Superior" bike with an MX2 engine bike on V-Twin News p.4, but that is fitted to Norton 16H frame. So here they are together! WoW! (...Along with Sid Leitch's MX2 Trackmaster, a "Brough Superior Special" MX2 engine in a Norton Featherbed frame, andthe final 1939 model Brough featuring an MX2 engine).

Les Phelps said, in an email to The Classic Motorcycle: "Although I have now covered 500 miles since its completion, I’ve had a few teething problems, though I’m hoping to have them ironed out soon.

I think it is unique, and it’s made of all period Model X and Matchless parts."

Les Phelps starts his unique 1939 Matchless OHV Model X after just finishing the build: ............compare to this newly-restored 1937 original Model X, also first start after 2-year restoration (not running for the last 60 years!)

1973 VINCATI 1200..... (The silver 1000 re-vamped)

''This is a very rare motorcycle; one of only six in the world. It is a classic hybrid of the famous V-twin Vincent engine in the mid 1970s excellent-handling 750 Ducati frame. It has updated modern features with a classic motor and frame. Some have described it as “Engine by Shakespeare, chassis by Michelangelo”.

The bike was originally silver and red and had been “mocked up” by its previous owner. The motorcycle had never started or run. Ziggy was able to modify pistons and cylinders, exhaust and install a starter system, and now she runs. After we knew the bike would start, run and ride, it was taken apart and repainted with gold anodized wheels and black paint. Beautiful, rare beast. It most recently won the Spirit of Innovation Award at the 2016 Quail Motorcycle Gathering in Carmel, California".

Howard BSA

1UjHWOD

2mHbDcQ camside_zpsb5jspwcj

It has cast iron crankcases. The motor is stock, rebuilt with new ball bearings, new 40 thou over pistons, new valves and guides.
It has Pazon electronic ignition & PVL coils to replace the magneto. It always starts first kick.
It has a Commando clutch & belt drive & a Lucas alternator from a Commando, a Tympanium AC converter/ voltage regulator.
Gearbox is stock 1928 BSA three speed. Front brake is BSA M20.
It's brass timing cover was too rough to save, I made that one from an old alloy barbecue plate.
Inlet manifold is home made & the carburetor is an Amal 276.
It is as comfortable to ride as any rigid frame girder fork bike.
It will cruise at 100/110 kph, but doesn't like going above that.
It is only the small petrol tank (with the oil tank in the front) and crankcase pressure that stops it being a great rally bike.
After last years All Brit, when it was first finished, it had a few oil leaks.
So we replaced the stock 3/16 ball & spring breather with a reed valve at the end of that tube above the primary cover.
I thought it had solved the problem as it was oil tight while riding around locally.
It wept a little oil from the lifter cover threads on the way to Newstead, but I was full throttle up the hills.
Keeping it under 3000rpm (100kph) on the ride to Maldon & back it remained oil tight, but 50 k into the run on Sunday it was leaking a lot of oil from the lifter covers even at 80kph, so I rode back to the rally site without completing the ride.
The bike went back to Melbourne on a trailer, and I rode my Commando home.
Tomorrow I'll start cleaning the burnt oil off the exhaust pipe, & increase the size of the breather hole into the tube.
