THE JAPTON
HARGREAVES-JAP. Built in Melbourne mid 1930s. Norton CS1 frame (1928-29 CS1 or ES2), Coventry Eagle Flying 8 (JAP) side valve crankcases, Sturmey Archer heads and barrels(some say from a Dunelt, since they were fitted with Sturmey Archer heads). JAP engine group: http://www.facebook.com/groups/262038688796/ Some say top ends are 1920s Raleigh twin-port (Raleighs were also fitted with Sturmey Archer engines)... however, this bike has hairpin valve springs, unlike the Dunelt or Raleigh machines. Dean Smallacombe provided this info: "Bike resides in Adelaide (my home town South Australia) it has Raleigh heads and barells fitted was raced in Victoria many years ago. There is a bit more info, photos, etc. on the JAP group page." Greg Summerton added," It would not be the first time that racing bikes were upgraded to, at the time, superior, hairpins springs...."
Another JAP in a Norton, with an aeroplane nose-cone...more pics: http://www.norton.uk.com/machines.htm
